Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - Peru 1936

Peru, the iconic opening scene from "Raiders of the lost Ark", was one of the first levels developed and finalized for the game, quit early in its development. The focus was to achieve filmic look and feel, which would later define the rest of the Indy game experience.

My work was focused on fleshing out, finalizing and shipping the cave part of the level, which includes cave entrance, iconic boulder scene, multiple traps and the famous Golden Idol scene. Achieving the right look was quite a challenge. Thankfully, we had access to plenty of behind-the-scenes material from Lucas Arts, which helped us to fill many gaps that would otherwise be there just from referencing raw movie footage immensely. Understanding how the sets were designed, which parts were the focus, and which were left completely in viewers’ imagination, helped us to understand how to create a convincing level out of a continuous movie section.

Ultimately, many people had a bigger or smaller hand in helping us finalize the level. From some people creating a texture or two, to fleshing out light trap section, there are too many to name, but I love ya'll all the same :D

During the course of production, level itself overcame some substantial changes. Early in development, we were investing heavily in tessellated and heightmap/displaced geometry, but during the switch to real-time GI, it proved to be too expensive, so that functionality was removed, meaning certain parts of the level needed to be tweaked substantially.

My personal hope is that the fans off the movies will appreciate the attention to detail we tried to keep, staying as close to the vision of the movie as we could :D

Temple/Cave Entrance. Movie one was entirely shrouded in darkness so in-game one needed to be reimagined.

Chasm area from the famous whip-swinging scene. Movie set was almost entirely cut off about 2m above the ground, so everything above that needed to be reimagined.
